What do you know about the Assembly of Expo Cities &
Regions? Founded by the B.I.E. in Hannover in 2000, with it's Inaugural
Assembly at Seville in 2002, to mark the 10th Anniversary of Seville's
Expo '92, the Assembly, known by its French acronym of A.V.E., is the
pre-eminent forum for past, present, and future Expo Cities and Regions to
network, share essential pre-, during, and post-Expo development
knowledge, as well as work towards a greater appreciation of the powerful
legacy and popular culture that an Expo City or Region gives the World -
for example, through commemorative publications, websites, Associations,
Foundations, and Museums.
Foundation Expo '88 is a case in this point - founded
after John McGregor - an Expo staff veteran of Brisbane '88, Seville' 92,
and Taejon '93 - attended the Seville 2002 Inaugural Assembly - and, being
a noble Brisbanite born and bred, decided to do something to commemorate
Brisbane's most successful World Expo '88 - hence the Foundation Expo '88
project was born - to create and maintain a comprehensive website for
World Expo '88; a historical, social, and administrative association for
the Expo; and a permanent commemorative World Expo '88 Community
Museum.
A.V.E. also works through the A.V.E. Assemblies, held in
principle every two years - in a past, present, or future Expo
City/Region. The most previous Assembly was held at the conclusion of Expo
2005 Aichi, Japan, in October 2005. Read the detailed B.I.E. page on the
Expo 2005 A.V.E. General Assembly, and learn more about this prestigious
body.

What is the Expo symbol flower and what can we learn from
it?
The Expo symbol flower is the Thai Ratchaphruek - known as
the 'Golden Shower Tree' because of its beautiful golden coloured petal
flowers - which have several significant auspicious references for the
Thai Kingdom - referring both to the State Religion Buddhism, and the
birth day of His Majesty the King, as well as the current dynasty of the
King.
Celebrating the 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee of His
Majesty the King - and the King's 80th Birthday - the 92-day Exposition
will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand - a popular tourist destination for
many visiting Thailand.
Over 2 million persons and 30 nations are expected to
participate at the Expo.

for the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition - and also the central focus for the
1888 Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition celebrating the
Centennial of European Settlement to Australia - was also the site of the
first meeting of the new Parliament of the Commonwealth Government of
Australia on 9 May 1901 - officiated by H.R.H. the Duke and Duchess of
Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary).
The Tom Roberts portrait of the proceedings at the Royal
Exhibition Building is considered the epoch-making work of the start of
the new nation, and has popularly entered into the nation's heritage. View
the portrait here:
http://www.peo.gov.au/resources/federation.htm The portrait joins with the official panorama photograph
of the Official Opening Ceremony of Brisbane's World Expo '88 - at the
World Expo '88 Riverstage, 30 April 1988, as being images that define the
Australian nation. How many V.I.P.s can you find in the 1988 equivalent of
Tom Roberts 1901 portrait? View the World Expo '88 Official Opening
Ceremony portrait photograph here: (reproduced at the Foundation Expo '88

describes more of the popular role of the Royal Exhibition Building and
the new Commonwealth here:

House of the State of Victoria until the Opening of the new provisional
Parliament House in Canberra in 1927. An interesting brief text and
