BIE News

Shanghai World Expo 2010 hosted a Special International Forum on 27 September 2006, entitled "Better City, Better Life: Making it Happen", on the themes of sustainable urban development, citizenry, and best practice. View the programme and the many distinguished delegates here:

What do you know of the BIE's categories of Exposition?
Universal Expositions, International Expositions, Specialised Expositions, World Expositions, World's Fairs and so on....Are they all the same? What is the official BIE classification for the different types of World Exposition? What is the popular usage?

Many of us know the difference between a Universal Exposition and an International/Specialised Exposition - at the Universal Exposition participants design and construct their own Pavilion, including the structure itself and its contents, resulting in a fantasy wonderworld of mystery iconic superstructures, sometimes several stories high and wide, that reach into the air, engage with the land, tease and evoke spectacle in the eye of the beholder - a celebration, a marker-in-time of the nation/corporation at the Exposition, both through the Pavilion's architectural expression, and its content within.

At International/Specialised Expositions, the essential Exposition premise is the same - a celebration of that nation/corporation indicative of the Exposition epoch and host city - however here, the Pavilion building itself is generally designed and constructed by the host Exposition Authority. Several, or several dozen, pre-fabricated structures of different sizes and shapes may be constructed by the Expo Authority, who then offers them to participants on a rental basis, who are then able to choose according to their own needs and budget. The participant then fills the Pavilion, whilst also adding façade elements to the Pavilion's exterior, to differentiate it from the next Pavilion, and so on.

As a result, the budget for a Universal Exposition, is sometimes three to five times more expensive than an International/Specialised Exposition, in terms of the Expo Authority budget, as well as that of the Participant. And correspondingly, there have only been four Universal Expositions of the post-War era, Brussells '58, Montreal '67, Osaka '70, and Sevilla '92.

But what is the official nomenclature for Universal Expositions and International/Specialised Expositions? And what about Exhibitions? And the use of the word 'Expo'? What else differs between Universal and International/Specialised Expositions?

According to BIE Regulations, the official nomenclature for a Universal Exposition is 'Registered Exhibition'. The official nomenclature for an International/Specialised Exposition is 'Recognised Exhibition'. And, also, the French word 'Exposition' is rendered as 'Exhibition' in the English language by the BIE. The word 'Expo' generally came into common usage with the Montreal Exposition of 1967, held in French/English-speaking Canada, which was popularly known in both English and French as 'expo '67', thereby creating a common title/logo for both languages.

Finally, Universal Expositions are six months length - no longer - and International/Specialised Expositions can be from six weeks duration, to also six months duration, and are occasionally three months in duration. Brisbane's World Expo '88 - an International/Specialised Exposition was six months length; Seville's Universal Exposition of 1992 was six months length; and Taejon (South Korea's) International Exposition of 1993 was three months length. Zaragoza's upcoming 2008 International/Specialised Exposition is also three months length.

The proposed Queensland 2009 International Exposition, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the State of Queensland 1859-2009, on the theme of 'Governance', is of two months length, from 6 May 2009 to 6 June 2009 (Proclamation of establishment of the State of Queensland 1859 and separation from the Colony of New South Wales) to 6 July 2009.

Is the BIE called the Bureau of International Expositions or the Bureau of International Exhibitions?

The official title of the BIE in French is Bureau International des Expositions. The official title of the BIE in English is the Bureau of International Exhibitions. However, the word Exposition is now popularly used in the English language where the word Exhibition was traditionally used, where today the word Exhibition is now popularly associated with Trade Fairs and Meetings of special-interest-groups.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 1 November 2006 - 31 January 2007

We have learned something of the BIE's category of Universal and International/Specialised Exposition, but what about the BIE and International Garden Expositions?

There is an extra category within the BIE for International Garden Expositions, which generally share the same rules as an International/Specialised Exposition, where native flora and landscaping provide a thematic context for a nation's/corporation's representation, and sometimes with the addition of an architectural statement, such as a Garden Conservatory Pavilion, resting place, or hut.

This category is shared with the International Association of Horticultural Producers, who jointly with the BIE grant 'A1' status to a successful International Garden Exposition, provided there is at least 2 years between International Garden Expositions, and 10 years between same Expositions in the same country.

For example, Royal Flora Ratchaphruek, the next A1 status International Garden Exposition, will be held between 1 November 2006 to 31 January 2007. This means the next available time slot for an International Garden Exposition in Thailand is November 2016, and the next available International Garden Exposition outside of Thailand is November 2008.

AUSTRALIAN EXPOSITIONS AND EXHIBITIONS CONNECTIONS

What do you know of the important heritage of the 1988 World Exposition in Brisbane Town today?

The 88-metre symbol tower 'Night companion', which was purchased by local flamboyant Brisbane entrepreneur Stefan Ackerie, of Stefan Hairfashions, is now located several hundred metres from its original World Expo '88 site. Visit the tower at your next visit to Brisbane! Its popular gold-and-copper topped dome and spire, with its Stefan signature rainbow rings, is a familiar sight in Brisbane City's South Brisbane skyline, and glows every evening. The tower's powerful Xenon-beam eye, which  surveilled the Brisbane night sky horizons every night of the six month Expo, also does the same today for special occasions. We hope that it will be alight again as during Expo, for the World Expo '88 20th Anniversary Celebrations.

The Nepalese Peace Pagoda - one of the only participant made Pavilions at the Expo - now occupies its pride of place at the Clem Jones Boulevard at South Bank Parklands - the beautiful and transformed site of World Expo '88, where we hope to launch the World Expo '88 Museum at the Pagoda's Second Level on Wednesday 30 April 2008 - the 20th Anniversary of the Official Opening Ceremony of the Expo.

The Japanese Pond & Garden, from the Japan Pavilion at Expo, was kindfully donated to the City of Brisbane at the conclusion of the Expo, where its many Australian plants and Japanese garden elements were re-located to its new Mt Cooth-ha Botanical Gardens site, where it is now open every day from 9.00a.m. to 5.30p.m.

Foundation Expo '88 is working with World Expo '88 and Government stakeholders for a greater commemorative presence at these three principle World Expo '88 heritage items.
