Australia's largest Gallery of Modern Art Opens at South Bank Parklands
The Premier's Office, et al. State Government of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia

South Bank Parklands, the re-developed site of World Expo '88, will soon see the opening of the final stage of the Queensland Government's Millennium Arts Precinct, featuring a considerably largened State Library of Queensland, a refurbished Queensland Art Gallery, a new Cultural Centre Plaza, and the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Australia's largest Art Gallery dedicated to modern art.

'Brisbane's new arts and cultural precinct at South Bank will provide the city with a dynamic, world class arts venue that will attract international visitors as well as Australians.', said Premier and Minister for Trade, Mr Peter Beattie MP. The Premier officially received the keys to the new facilities last week, and shall officiate at the State Library's opening on 25 November, and at a special Open Day for the Gallery of Modern Art on Saturday 2 December.

Some 1 million items and 5,500 art works will be moving into the new venues in the next few weeks, as well as preparing for the Fifth Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, which will have its inaugural launch at both the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.

The $291 million Millennium Arts Precinct is an initiative of the Queensland Government. Construction on the new Gallery of Modern Art, the new Cultural Centre Plaza, and refurbishment and extensions of the Queensland Art Gallery and State Library began in 2004.

PREMIER UNVEILS NEW GATEWAY TO SOUTH BANK
The Premier's Office, State Government of Queensland, and South Bank Corporation, Brisbane.

Premier Peter Beattie today unveiled the winning bid to develop 9A and 9B Collins Place, the largest remaining vacant site at South Bank. Mr Beattie said the winning concept, with a construction value of $200 million, would provide South Bank with an impressive southern gateway.

'The site will become home to a mix of retail, hotel, residential, office and public space, while preserving the historic Collins Place at its heart,' Mr Beattie said. 'Increasingly, people want to live and work close to great public spaces and dynamic environments with access to efficient public transport networks and this concept delivers that. It will improve the public spaces surrounding the South Bank rail and busway stations and most importantly, preserve a piece of Brisbane's history with Collins Place at the centre of the development.'

South Bank Corporation Chairman Steve Wilson said the winning bid was in line with Corporation's expectations for the site. 'The Anthony John Group has put forward an exciting proposal that will provide a wonderful addition to South Bank,' Mr Wilson said. 'The development represents a significant milestone in achieving the precinct's master plan - developing Grey Street as a great street. This significant investment in the future of South Bank will contribute to the area's continued evolution and vision of becoming the world's best new urban precinct, he said.
