Trade of Queensland, the Honourable Mr Peter Beattie MP.
PREMIER NOMINATES FIVE ICONIC QUEENSLAND SITES FOR MONOPOLY
Premier Peter Beattie said today he had nominated five Smart State icons for possible inclusion in the new 'Monopoly Australia Here & Now' edition of the ever popular board game. "I want to thank everyone who took the time to email, write or just
chat to me in the street about which Queensland icons should be included
in the new version of Monopoly," Mr Beattie said. "It's been a tough
decision but after reading the submissions and talking to a lot of
Queenslanders I have decided to nominate, in no particular order:
o The Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach
o Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast o Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, o the Great Barrier Reef; and o Brisbane's South Bank cultural precinct "The company behind Monopoly, Hasbro, set a hard task in allowing me
to nominate just five iconic sites for a State as beautiful and diverse as
Queensland. I believe the five icons I have chosen represent Queensland in
all of its diversity, along the four points of the compass. Dozens and
dozens of locations, towns and buildings were suggested by Queenslanders
over the past few weeks. Hundreds of people have taken the time to let me
know their favourite Queensland icon and I want to thank everyone for
making a contribution. Support came in for an amazing variety of icons
including highways, trees, sporting venues and even public toilets. Truly
the sublime to the ridiculous," Mr Beattie said.
All State Premiers have been able to nominate five iconic places to
be part of an online promotion where voters will decide on the top three
from each Australian State and Territory.

THE STEFAN SKY NEEDLE - THE EXPO THEME TOWER UNDER
REPAIR
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,20706935-29277,00.html?from=public_rss
Bird droppings possible cause of tower fire November 05, 2006 10:12pm
BIRD droppings may have caused a fire that partially destroyed Brisbane's 88m landmark tower, Stefan Sky Needle. The Sky Needle's owner, Queensland celebrity hairdresser Stefan
Ackerie, said he had been told by investigators that droppings may have
short circuited its electrical system. The fire began about 4pm (AEST)
yesterday in the 18-year-old heritage listed tower in Manning Street,
South Brisbane and could be seen more than 1km away. But firefighters
could only look on after they found it was too difficult to organise
aerial equipment to reach the blaze at the top of the tower. It burned
itself out in about half an hour.
Mr Ackerie today vowed he would restore the tower and make it better
than it was originally. With today's technology it will be better than
it ever was. It will be made state-of-the-art in every possible way, he
told ABC Radio.Queensland Fire and Rescue spokesman Tom James said the
tower had not suffered any structural damage. It's still intact, the
sheeting around the outside's still intact, he told ABC Radio. (There)
doesn't appear to be any structural problems with it at all.
Mr Ackerie spent $1 million re-erecting the rainbow-coloured
structure after Expo 88 when it was due to be sent to Tokyo Disneyland.
